Enrolment in the SAS scheme is only available to ‘New Starters’. Please do not apply if you meet the ‘Transitional Arrangements’ criteria on Page 87 of the IACSD Standards. The SAS scheme is not available to practitioners who have undertaken knowledge and skills-based training elsewhere.

In summary, the stages of the SAAD Assessed Sedationist scheme are

  • Registration for the SAS scheme, nomination of a clinical supervisor and payment of the £315 course fee.
  • Acceptance on to the SAAD National Course and approval of the clinical supervisor
  • Attendance at the SAAD National Course
  • Successful completion of the written assessment at the end of the SAAD National Course
  • Provision, under supervision of 20 IV sedations (including 10 when the treatment was also provided by the trainee) and/or 10 IS (including 5 when the treatment was also provided by the trainee)
  • Submission of logbook(s), DOPs and Practice Evaluation Checklist(s) to SAAD
  • Internal moderation of documents by SAAD
  • Satisfactory completion is confirmed and you become a SAAD Assessed Sedationist able to provide sedation independently in accordance with the IACSD guidance

Potential ‘New Starters’ must provide the following information at the time of registering for the SAS scheme:

  • Intended sedation technique(s)
  • Age group of patients - adults, children (<16) or both
  • Name of proposed clinical supervisor
  • GDC / GMC No. of proposed clinical supervisor
  • Qualifications of proposed clinical supervisor
  • Dental sedation experience of proposed clinical supervisor
  • Approx number of dental sedation provided in the last 12 months
  • Dental sedation services offered by proposed clinical supervisor
  • Address of the practice(s) where the clinical supervision will take place
  • A brief description of the dental sedation facilities

The IACSD defines standards for the provision of conscious sedation in dentistry. Please refer to the 'Standards for Conscious Sedation in the Provision of Dental Care. Report of the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry' April 2015, This is the most recent guidance and often referred to as the IACSD Report. The IACSD can, on receipt of a satisfactory application, approve clinical supervisors for ‘New Starter’ sedationists and DCPs who are not receiving training associated with a university or postgraduate dental deanery.

Approval is based on the information you provide to SAAD, and SAAD is not responsible for the supervision provided. Approval of a supervisor by SAAD does not entitle either the supervisor or supervisee to use the logos of SAAD or IACSD.

SAAD will not be liable for damages of any sort that may result from decisions taken by practitioners following supervision by an approved clinical supervisor for dental sedation. Supervisees who have concerns relating to any aspects of the supervision provided by an approved clinical supervisor should make the IACSD aware of these concerns.
